What Is The Abortion Pill Method?

The abortion pill method is a form of medical or chemical abortion. It uses two drugs over a 24 to 48-hour period to terminate a pregnancy.

The FDA has approved this method through 70 days or less since the first day of a woman’s last menstrual period.

Mifepristone, the first drug, blocks progesterone, a crucial hormone during pregnancy. This hormone is necessary for the fetus to stay implanted in the lining of your uterus.

Without progesterone, the uterine lining does not provide the developing fetus with food, fluid, and oxygen. As a result, the pregnancy ends.

The second drug, misoprostol, stimulates the uterus to contract and expel the fetus.

FDA Guidelines state you must return to the abortion clinic for a follow-up exam two weeks after taking misoprostol. You need to confirm whether or not the medical abortion was successful. If the abortion was incomplete, any parts left behind could cause an infection and permanent injury.

Is Abortion Right For Me?

Before you schedule an abortion, we recommend the following:

  • Consult a doctor about your medical history
  • Take a lab-quality pregnancy test
  • Confirm your positive result with ultrasound – to rule out an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage and to identify how far along you are in your pregnancy
  • Lab work
  • STD/STI testing
  • Physical exam

With 1 in 4 pregnancies ending naturally in miscarriage and 1 in 50 being ectopic, scheduling an ultrasound can protect your health and safety. Both of these conditions will require medical treatment other than abortion.
